Racial tensions rise at FSU as election nears

While student organizations at Florida State University work to get students to the polls for early voting, an FSU student who is a supporter of former President Donald Trump was seen Monday screaming aggressively, “Liberal f*cks!”

The aggressive student drove by Landis Green to intimidate the Democratic student leaders and other students. Some of the students said his screaming made them feel endangered and scared.

FSU Florida Future Leader, Michelle Gunn, an African American female, said she felt that it was unbelievable that the Democratic students were being intimidated by a Republican student.

“I feel like it’s really, really insane to see something like that because we’re here with our future leaders. We’re here as Democrats, but we’re here every day engaging with students very politely,” she said.

“We’ll talk to anybody. We talked to Republicans, we talked to Trump supporters,” Gunn added.

As the FSU Trump supporter drove by Landis Green parading Trump’s 2024 campaign flag, one of the Democratic supporters stopped him to question him about what he said.

“So, what did you think you said?” the FSU student asked.

The  angry student supporting Trump said his name was Roger. “I’m sorry y’all are liberals,” he added.

Deona, the student who questioned Roger, described him as “hostile.” She and other students thought they heard Roger say, “N*gger f*cks” before he drove away.

However, he drove back and clarified that he said, “Liberal f*cks.”

“So, what’s up?” Deona said.

Roger retorted, “Trump’s poll numbers. Not the economy right now.”

Deona told The Famuian that it was obvious to her and others that Roger’s statements were bigoted and racist.

Roger ended the confrontation with, “Of course it’s bigotry.”

Gunn, a  member of Florida Future Leaders, said, “This is not the first incident and it probably won’t be the last, so we need the university administration to do something to stop being complacent, to tell these students it’s not OK because we as Black students, as liberal, as Democratic students, we have a right to be here too. We share a campus, and we share it respectfully.”

However, Roger’s confrontation with Deona did not stop him from driving around the campus to reveal his support for Trump.

A different FSU student is under investigation after posting  hate speech on Snapchat last week. Owen Howard was at last week’s Market Wednesday on the FSU campus and posted “Chimps are going to chimp out.”

The term “chimp” has been a racial slang toward African Americans for hundreds of years. Market Wednesday is a social networking event for FSU’s Black Greek organizations and others to present their cultural beliefs and standards.

FSU’s NAACP chapter said it was disappointed and posted their press release on Instagram.

“This racist comparison has been a tool of white supremacy since the 1800s, intended to strip Black individuals of their humanity and portray them as inferior or less than human. These dehumanizing stereotypes were central to justifying slavery, segregation and other forms of racial oppression,” FSU NAACP President Kaela Jackson wrote.

Jackson added,” We will not tolerate racism in any form at FSU, and we stand united in our demand for meaningful steps from the university to address this situation.”

While students are experiencing racial tensions on FSU’s campus, they are not letting that deter them from early voting and advocating for the election on Nov. 5.
