John Amos, a beloved figure in the world of television and a well-known name in Black households, died on Aug. 21 in Los Angeles due to natural causes. He was 84.

His son,  Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed his death on Tuesday in a statement his publicist released to CBS News.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold…” said Kelly.

Amos was born on Dec 27, 1939. He rose to fame as an actor and writer. He is best known for his roles in the classic sitcom “Good Times,” where he portrayed James Evans, the father in the family. “Good Times” ran for six seasons and was one of the first Black two-parent household shows on television in the 1970s.

Amos also earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Kunta Kinte in the ABC series “Roots,” which showcases his ability to bring every character he plays to life.

Amos’s impact extended far beyond the screen. His legacy is not only defined by his on-screen achievements but also by his dedication to uplifting voices within the community.

He has used his platform to bring attention to the challenges and triumphs of the Black entertainers. His commitment to starring in shows that showcase the positive side of Black families helped future generations of Black actors.

“That show [Good Times] was the closest depiction in reality to life as an African American family living in those circumstances,” Amos told Time magazine.

According to his son Kelly, Amos’ most recent role would’ve been in “Suits LA,” the spinoff of NBC’s hit show “Suits.”  This show is expected to follow a former federal prosecutor from New York, where Amos would make a special appearance as himself and portray a client at Ted’s law firm. Amos will only appear in the pilot of ‘Suits LA,’ and there will be a tribute.

“Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his works in television and film as an actor,” said Kelly. Amos, being a TV father to his viewers, inspired the documentary he was working on with his son about his life journey as an actor titled ‘America’s Dad.’

John Amos will be missed, but his contributions to television and the Black community will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his daughter Shannon, a former entertainment executive, and Kelly Christopher, a Grammy-nominated music video director, both from his first marriage to Noel Mickelson.
