As the semester moves into high gear, students look forward to the Inauguration of the 2024-2025 student leaders— a night to celebrate accomplishments and congratulate the individuals entrusted to represent the student body. Florida A&M University’s administration has changed with the transition of interim President Timothy Beard in early August, so students wonder what big events like the inauguration will look like this academic year.

SGA President Loryn May and Vice President Dakari Williams anticipate a night of joy as they will be sworn into their positions. They plan to serve according to their platform points and continue to advocate for the students of FAMU.

The 54th Senate President, Zayla Bryant, and Senate Pro-Tempore, Treyvious Copeland, will also be recognized.

Since being elected, the May and Williams administration has hit the ground running through service and keeping student life alive. Most recently, the administration hosted a town hall meeting with Tallahassee Mayor John Daily, operating as an opportunity to connect with local leadership. This administration has been at the forefront of this year’s election season; hosting various Zoom webinars with other HBCU leaders and organizations to encourage voting on campus.

The work didn’t stop there. May Williams continued by allowing students to learn how to propose and pass their bills. “Under the 54th Student Senate, we are committed to bridging the gap between students and administration,”  Kaitlyn Gaines, a junior senator and vice chair of student relations, said.

The administration continues to work on keeping students informed in the upcoming 2024 election while also centering its focus on students, ensuring they know their rights on and off campus.

The Bryant-Copeland administration is working to mend and maintain the internal processes with the legislative branch to align with the procedures and processes.

Bryant is extremely confident in her team to execute almost all policies according to their priorities.

“One of my priorities is transparency. I have worked across the branches to publish legislation on the school website along with meeting minutes and agendas,” Bryant said.

Bryant and Copeland’s main goal is to keep students involved with decisions made and bills passed.

Through these two administrations, the Student Government Association has built a strong foundation of effective communication between students and faculty. The campus looks forward to more initiatives put in place once student leaders are fully transitioned. The Inauguration will kick off Friends and Family Weekend on Friday, Sept. 27.
