The Florida A&M University (FAMU) women’s cross-country team will compete Friday at the FSU XC Invitational. The team enters the meet looking to make significant strides after their last competition at the Georgia Tech Cross Country Invitational in Atlanta, where Tara Bert led the Rattlers by breaking personal records. She posted the fastest times in back-to-back meets and finished 61st out of 191 runners.

Cross country coach Tamika Kinchen emphasizes the importance of consistency and hard work.

“Last week was a testament that if we maintain consistency, they will put themselves in a position to accomplish what they’re truly capable of achieving,” Kinchen said.

Another runner aiming to build on a strong performance is Lacie Deboskie, who finished 107th with a time of 26:09.81.

Deboskie, an accomplished runner for the cross-country team, shared her thoughts on the season.

“The season has been rough so far because we understand that we are returning champs, and there is a target on our backs. With the preparation from our coaches, they make sure that we are always focused and mentally locked in. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be a champion, and I feel that we have been moving in that direction,” Deboskie said.

Following the FSU meet, the Rattlers will compete at the SWAC Championship. Their placement in Friday’s meet will determine their position for the race.

“Self-assurance and mental strength have been areas we’ve lacked this season. Hopefully, tomorrow will show that we are overcoming those obstacles. The mental aspect is what separates us from a repeat; if we overcome it, we will be better positioned for the SWAC Championship,” Kinchen said.

Niya Coleman, a member of the championship team, discussed the team’s potential for improvement.

“The team can continue to reach new heights by locking in and tuning out all distractions. We need to ensure everyone is on the same page and working toward our ultimate goal, which is winning the SWAC.”

The Rattlers meet at 8:20 a.m. Friday, followed by the SWAC Championship on Monday.
