Florida A&M University has launched this semester with new leadership. Audrey Alexander has been appointed as the university’s new Chief of Police and will take her seat on Friday.
All of Alexander’s past experiences and immense dedication have prepared her to take on this new leadership role. Her resume spans from military service to police service.
Alexander attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s in both public administration and adult education.
After graduating , Alexander joined the military and served for 24 years. While serving her country, she joined the U.S. Army Reserve and Florida National Guard.
During this time, she assumed many leadership positions, such as executive officer, company commander, platoon leader, squad leader, and investigative officer. Additionally, Alexander completed a one-year tour duty in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
After many leadership years in the military, Alexander decided to make the shift to the police force.
While in the police force, Alexander took on many roles that reflected her dedication to her school and her community. Before being appointed Chief of Police, Alexander worked as a director/administrative lieutenant for the FAMU Police Department.
According to the announcement released by the university, Alexander’s role will consist of overseeing 25 sworn and non-sworn officers, development of departmental budgets, and implementation of community policing initiatives.
Alexander is not only certified as a 911 dispatcher, but she has also served as interim chief of police, administrative sergeant, investigator, and patrol officer.
“Lieutenant Alexander has the necessary qualifications and has demonstrated her commitment to serve FAMU in this important role,” said Chief Financial Officer, Rebecca Brown. “With her proven track record of leadership, we have complete confidence in her ability and her vision for ensuring the safety of our campus.”
With more than 29 years of law enforcement experience under her belt, as well as working hand in hand with the University in the Department of Campus Safety, serving and maintaining the various positions she once served, Alexander says she is prepared to take on the role of Police Chief.
“I am both excited and humbled to take on this new role and continue serving our campus community with dedication and commitment,” said Alexander. “Having served the FAMU community over the last quarter of a century, I am deeply invested in the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that our campus remains a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for everyone.”
