In a strategic move that has captured widespread attention, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 election. Walz, a seasoned politician with a rich background, brings a blend of experience and relatability to the ticket.

Tim Walz’s political career began in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he notably flipped a Republican-leaning district in Minnesota, showcasing his ability to win in challenging environments. As governor of Minnesota, he has championed progressive causes such as reproductive rights, gun safety, and expanded educational opportunities, including free meals for students—a program that has garnered national praise.

Beyond politics, Walz’s background is deeply rooted in public service and education. A former high school teacher and football coach, he has remained connected to the values of his community, making him a relatable figure to many Americans. His military service in the Army National Guard adds another layer to his profile, further establishing him as a leader with a broad understanding of the challenges facing the nation.

Walz is also known for his strong family values, being a devoted husband and father, which complements Harris’s narrative of unity and compassion. This blend of political acumen, commitment to progressive policies, and strong personal values raises the question: Is Tim Walz the ideal candidate to help Kamala Harris secure the White House in 2024? His track record suggests that he might just be the perfect fit for the role…

Kennedy Williams, a second year pre-law student and Vice President of Students for Harris believes that Harris made the right decision in choosing Walz as her running mate.

“He brings a refreshing sense of humility and offers a down-to-earth perspective on what it means to be a working-class American,” Williams said. “In our current political climate, Walz stands out from the other candidates. As a midwestern, he has the potential to secure votes in swing states and he is quite relatable for younger Americans who are concerned about a host of issues that impact us.”

With the new election season fastly approaching, the FAMU Students for Harris was created to uphold the integrity of democratic values. More than ever the country sees an increase in student enrollment at HBCUs making it essential for students to mobilize and show prospective students and the younger generation the importance of voting.

Courtney Stephenson, a third year political science student and President of FAMU College Democrats thinks Walz ability to reform and change the state of Minnesota is very telling of his character and what he can bring to the table.

“He doesn’t have the typical political background,” Stephenson said. “He represented a historically republican district during his tenure in Congress, which is telling of his character. Walz is a fighter, and that is something our nation so desperately needs. Americans need Harris and Walz more than ever.”

“With this being Gen-Z’s first major election, our generation’s electorate are majority people of color. The power is in our hands,” Stephenson added.

Registered Democrat Sharanda Davis shared her thoughts on Harris’ selection.

“I do not know much about Walz, but from what I’ve seen, he’s a family man with a big heart,” Davis said. “After seeing the outpour of support both Walz and Harris received, and through my own research, I believe that he was the best candidate for the ticket. This election is more important than ever. I believe that this is a strong group the Democrats have selection, but we must make sure people get out and vote to make sure we don’t go back. We must progress and be better for the next generation.”
