The Soles 4 Souls program has been in place at Florida A&M since the beginning of the spring 2010 semester. Members of Alpha Rho Chi had been working on upcoming community service ideas when the idea of collecting shoes came up.

Jason Granado, also a member of Alpha Rho Chi, said his organization noticed a few clothing drives going and they wanted to help. The fraternity contacted the Soles 4 Souls national headquarters.

“A lot of us had a lot of old shoes and thought that it would be nice if we had a shoe drive,” said Granado. “So we did some research and found out about Soles 4 Souls.”

According to Grace, the Soles 4 Souls program at FAMU was put into effect before the disaster in Haiti. However, once news of the earthquake’s devastation had been announced, all of the organization’s efforts shifted toward Haiti.

So far, members say they have collected about two bins of shoes. Members are also encouraging more students to become involved.

“We don’t have any boundaries against anyone who wants to help us,” said Xavier Coney, the community service chair of the FAMU chapter of Alpha Rho Chi.

Any student who wants to contribute to the Sole 4 Souls campaign can visit the Florida A&M School of Architecture or contact Jason Granado at 954-679-5413. Students can also visit www.soles4souls.org for additional information.
